Planning your safe AI journey
When it comes to AI, it’s likely you’ve got a team of hikers all planning their own ways up the mountain using unproven tools in unproven ways, or not enough tools, or are planning their ascent without oxygen.
If they all continue to go it alone, the risk is high and the losses could be devastating. Consider an AI Expedition with an experienced guide team.
What is a Safe and Successful AI Summit Expedition?
McKinsey research has estimated that gen AI has the potential to add up to $4.4 trillion in economic value to the global economy while enhancing the impact of all AI by 15 to 40 percent. While many corporate leaders are exploring how to capture this value, there’s recognition that 1) implementing gen AI in a way that drives measurable business value is harder than it first appeared and 2) gen AI implementations can be accompanied by significant risks.
In a recent flash survey of more than 100 organizations with more than $50 million in annual revenue, McKinsey found:
63% of respondents characterize the implementation of gen AI as a “high” or “very high” priority.
91% of these respondents don’t feel “very prepared” to do so in a responsible manner. Post here.
We’re very aware that most leaders need help when it comes to developing AI fitness responsibly. Which is why we’ve created a series of supports to get organizations on their journey to implement gen ai responsibly and effectively. To avoid inertia, we’ve plotted a path - an AI Summit Expedition, if you will - and hope it’ll inspire leaders to begin now, in order to gain the advantages gen AI can offer sooner rather than later.
Let’s put our boots on and start the exploration together.
Setting the context for an AI summit expedition
Step 1: Getting to Base Camp:
The first step is getting to Base Camp. This initial stage involves recognizing the potential of AI for your organization and assembling a team to lead the exploration. You’ll begin your organization’s fitness assessment and gather information about different AI tools and their applications relevant to your industry. Think of this as scouting the terrain and setting up your base for the AI journey ahead. And we’ll be able to answer the question: how ready is your organization for the climb?
Step 2: Acclimatization Hikes:
Just like adjusting to altitude, your organization needs to acclimatize to AI. Here, we’ll begin to build your internal guides for small-scale AI pilots or proof-of-concept projects in controlled environments. This allows you to learn the potential and limitations of AI in a safe and contained setting, building foundational knowledge, understanding of risks and potential for climbing leadership within your team.
Step 3: Permitting and Briefings:
Similar to obtaining permits for a trek, ensure your organization has the necessary governance, training, and risk management infrastructure and resources to handle AI. This step will involve developing your Strategic AI Statement, reviewing ethical guidelines for AI use, securing data privacy protocols, and creating responsible deployment strategies for your pilots and proof-of-concept projects. Think of this as getting your team in shape and trained properly before you embark on a larger expedition.
Step 4: Gear Check and Packing:
Here's where you take a deeper dive and assess your organization's AI readiness. This involves taking inventory of your existing data, your talent with AI expertise, and the computational resources needed to run AI models. We’ll help you identify gaps and invest in necessary training and/or infrastructure upgrades. Essentially, you're packing your backpacks and tents with the right tools and resources for the AI trek.
Step 5: Trekking:
This is where AI implementation begins in earnest. You'll be actively deploying AI tools in designated areas of your organization, integrating them with existing workflows, and monitoring their performance. We’ll help you and your team be prepared to adapt your approach as you learn and encounter challenges. Just like the weather, AI changes come quickly. You can’t be disconnected from advances while you’re trekking.
Step 6: Summit Push (Optional):
This stage represents achieving a significant milestone with AI. Which could be the full-scale deployment of your first pilot AI project and measuring the initial success in terms of a core business process; or the recognition of a major opportunity for AI in your organization. Reaching the summit signifies a major achievement on your AI maturity path.
Ongoing: Descent and Return:
Even after achieving success, responsible AI use requires continuous monitoring, measuring and adaptation. Evaluate the ongoing impact of AI, address potential challenges, keep your teams trained and fit, and refine your approach as needed. The descent represents the ongoing journey of maintaining and evolving your AI practices.
